Biography

Roger A. Putnam, a former Senior Partner, serves as the firm’s Special Counsel on ethics matters. Mr. Putnam has been with Verrill Dana since 1958. His active practice focused on general litigation, public utilities, and legal ethics. He served as an Assistant Attorney General of the State of Maine from 1951 to 1958.

Roger attended the University of New Hampshire in 1942-43, and left to serve in the United States Army. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to the University of New Hampshire and he later attended Boston University School of Law, from which he received his LL.B. in 1951.

Mr. Putnam is a Fellow of the American Bar and Maine State Bar Associations, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Maine Bar Foundation. In 2004, Mr. Putnam received the Maine Bar Foundation's Howard H. Dana, Jr. Award. He is a member of the Cumberland Bar Association and currently serves as Secretary for the Portland Senior Lawyers Association. He has served as President of the Maine Equal Justice Project. Additionally, Roger has served as a member of the Maine Justice Action Group. He has served on the Board of Cleaves Law Library, with one term as its President, and continues to serve on its Development Committee. Roger is a former Secretary-Treasurer of the Gignoux Inn of Court. He is a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maine School of Law, and continues on the Executive Committee of the Boston University School of Law Alumni Association. Mr. Putnam formerly chaired the Maine Judicial Ethics Committee, appointed by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.
