Gordy Smith represented a group of Washington County property owners involved in litigation to prevent harvesting of rockweed on their property. A March 21, Bangor Daily News article reported that a Washington County Superior Court Judge ruled on March 16, 2017, that the property owners do, in fact, have exclusive rights to the rockweed growing in the intertidal zones of their property. Commenting on the case and the position of his clients, Gordy is quoted in the article as saying, "It is an ecological issue for them. They have concerns about how the resource is being extracted." He added, "Both parties expected the Superior Court decision to be taken to the Law Court, no matter how it comes out. We're making new law here."
