Biography

Harold represents corporations and individuals in a variety of complex commercial litigation matters, including director and officer liability, antitrust and construction defects. Harold is often retained by international insurers to "parachute in" as trial counsel in catastrophic loss cases just days or weeks before trial. Likewise, he frequently represents product manufacturers in serious injury matters involving machinery.

Harold successfully represented the Government of Mexico and migrant Mexican farm workers against the leading egg producer in the United States in a landmark class action matter alleging race discrimination and civil rights violations. A former federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, New York, he now defends complex white collar criminal charges, including matters involving the sales of weapons to foreign nations and the importation of biological material.

Prior to joining Verrill Dana, Harold operated his own practice as the founding partner of Friedman Gaythwaite Wolf. Harold has tried over 100 cases to juries throughout the United States. Over three decades later, trying the highest profile and most complex cases is still his passion. He was honored to be one of just 500 lawyers worldwide inducted into the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.

A native of Detroit, Harold lives in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, with his wife, Mary Mitchell Friedman, an attorney. His daughter Sara, an aspiring singer and actress, is a student at the Tisch School of Performing Arts in New York. Harold has two grown children, Anna, a litigation paralegal in Boston, and Douglas, a former professional hockey player. He also enjoys reading about foreign affairs and tries his hand at skiing, fly-fishing and golf.
