Energy projects face complex challenges, requiring both precision and scope. Verrill Dana's Energy Group consists of a well integrated, multi-disciplinary team of experienced professionals. Because of our depth of experience across a wide range of areas -- including regulatory, environmental, real estate, finance, corporate tax and government relations, the Energy Group is able to coordinate and implement the full range of services required to successfully represent energy clients in today's evolving energy markets and regulations. Our Energy Group works closely with its colleagues at Maine Street Solutions to provide public affairs and government relations support for our energy clients.

We have served as counsel in many complex energy transactions. These transactions include: sales and acquisitions of generation facilities, including hydropower facilities; mergers and acquisitions of energy companies and regulated utilities; purchases and sales of electric energy and capacity; acquisition of utility rights-of-way or energy corridors; advice regarding energy and new markets tax credits; and the permitting of several major new high voltage electric transmission lines and high pressure natural gas pipelines. We regularly represent both generators and transmission providers before FERC and the Maine PUC in proceedings such as rate cases, certificate proceedings and consumer complaint cases, and before the Maine DEP and LURC, in seeking siting approval. Our work also includes environmental permitting and compliance associated with an existing high pressure natural gas pipeline and compressor station facilities.

Moreover, we have considerable appellate experience. We have represented wind developers and electric utilities in numerous proceedings before the Maine Superior Court and the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, seeking judicial review of decisions by regulatory agencies.

In the last few years, the Energy Group has successfully represented several energy companies in the development and permitting of nine wind projects in Maine, totaling 475 megawatts of capacity.
