Commentary from the Academic and Clinical Research Group

Emily brings a unique “inside” perspective to the practice of human research law, having served for over a decade as senior in-house counsel for human research matters to a large health system and its academic medical centers and institutional review boards (IRBs). Emily’s practice focuses on a range of issues and areas related to the conduct and oversight of clinical research, including human subject protection, HIPAA privacy, other regulatory compliance, sponsored research and other collaborative research agreements, human tissue and data repositories, and clinical quality measurement and research contracts. She also has specific experience advising on single, central and other cooperative IRB review arrangements, and is a regular speaker on topics pertaining to such relationships, as well as other legal issues that arise in research. For several years, she has co-developed legal track educational sessions for the nationally and internationally attended Advancing Ethical Research Conference sponsored by Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research and Boston University. Emily believes that successful research initiatives and the resolution of problems that occur in research depend on the varied stakeholders’ understandings of one another’s perspectives and of the legal, ethical, and policy frameworks under which each one is operating. She enjoys helping health care providers, universities, industry and other research organizations work with one another, and even within their organizations, to gain and strengthen these understandings.

Prior to joining Verrill Dana, Emily was a Senior Attorney in the Research and Technology division of the Office of the General Counsel at Partners HealthCare System, which includes Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. While at Partners, Emily was also the staff attorney in charge of managing legal affairs for Newton-Wellesley Hospital, a nationally recognized community hospital within the system. Earlier in her career, she was an associate at Ropes & Gray, LLP.

In addition to practicing law, Emily enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children. She has succeeded in conveying her love of reading to her children, and has discovered (or re-discovered) a passion for children’s literature. In between coordinating her family’s busy schedules, she also tries to make time to pursue her lifelong hobby of tap dancing.
