Biography

Eric counsels employers in a wide variety of employee benefit and executive compensation matters, with particular emphasis on retirement plans, deferred compensation plans, fiduciary compliance and the unique issues that are of concern to tax-exempt employers. Eric also maintains an active corporate practice in the health care industry, serving as general counsel to private medical groups and advising medical practices and hospitals on contracting, physician compensation and medical group integration transactions.

Although he maintains a diverse practice in employee benefits and executive compensation, Eric has developed particular skill in issues that affect tax-exempt employers and employers in the health care industry. Beyond nuts and bolts legal compliance work, Eric has worked extensively with Boards of Directors and Compensation Committees in the establishment of compensation programs, compliance with the “intermediate sanctions” rules and the development of sound corporate governance and fiduciary policies and practices. He enjoys helping executives and board members of hospitals, universities and other exempt entities meet the challenges of governing their organizations.

Eric has served in leadership positions on a number of non-profit boards in Portland. He is particularly proud of his work on the restoration of Portland Observatory (1807), which achieved National Historic Landmark status. Eric now serves as First Vice President and Chair of the Planning Committee of Portland Public Library, and he was a Co-Chair of its recently completed capital campaign.

Eric enjoys outdoor activities, including boating, cycling and cross-country skiing. He has completed three marathons, more than 20 sprint and Olympic distance triathlons, and the Peaks-to-Portland Swim (twice). Eric also chairs the Firm’s Marketing Committee and is a regular contributor to the Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation Group blog:  www.employeebenefitsupdate.com.
