Kate Healy is a Partner in Verrill Dana's Health Care Group and the Chair of the Health Technology Group.  Kate maintains a general health law practice with an emphasis on hospital law, health information technology, including HIPAA compliance and the electronic exchange of health information, physician contracting, and health care regulatory compliance, including federal Stark and Anti-Kickback issues. 

Kate represents hospitals, medical practices, and other health care service providers on a wide range of transactional and regulatory matters. Kate is also legal counsel for HealthInfoNet, Maine's state-wide electronic health information exchange. She regularly advises health care providers in contract negotiations, business transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, and regulatory compliance matters. 

Kate is the Chair-elect of the Health Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association and was an active member of the Maine Hospital Association work group created to review advance directives laws and legal forms.  Kate is a frequent speaker before health care professionals on HIPAA and electronic health records, Stark and Anti-Kickback compliance, advance directives, and informed consent.

  • Corporate representation of health care service providers, including advice regarding state licensing, regulatory compliance, and operational requirements.
  • Contract negotiation on behalf of hospitals, medical practices, and individual physicians, including space, equipment, physician recruitment and employment, and ancillary services agreements.
  • Representation of medical practices in the acquisition of the practice by area hospital systems, including related employment and compensation arrangements for physicians.
  • Representation of a Southern Maine hospital in the acquisition of medical practices, including changes in hospital corporate governance and employment and compensation arrangements for physicians.
  • Advice to hospitals, medical practices, health information exchange, and other health care providers, regarding health information privacy and security law.
  • Development of hospital corporate compliance programs.
