George Field is in his thirtieth year of providing superior client service in the areas of business litigation and dispute resolution. He has been rated by his peers as one of "The Top 100 Massachusetts Super Lawyers" in 2008.
A graduate of The Boston Latin School, Harvard College and Boston College Law School , George has concentrated his practice in Greater Boston but has litigated in more than twenty other jurisdictions. His successful cases in the area of intellectual property include a $13 million judgment for patent infringement in favor of a Fortune 500 company, and the affirmance of that judgment on appeal in the Federal Circuit after en banc argument. In addition, he has successfully litigated important exceptions to attorney-client privilege in the area of patent opinions. He has been principal counsel in many complex arbitration proceedings, including multi-party international arbitrations. George has broad experience in bankruptcy litigation, having for several years represented the debtor, an energy company, in the largest privately held Chapter 11 case in the country (GHR Industries, Inc.), and having represented the Hunt Brothers of Dallas in major energy-related litigation.
Closer to home, George was trial counsel for the Trustee of a bankrupt Boston company which obtained (and later received payment of) a $1 million jury verdict against the City of Boston in Suffolk Superior Court. In his appellate work, George has succeeded in establishing new law in Massachusetts in the areas of insurance and commercial real estate by prevailing on issues of first impression under state statutes. He has also prevailed on appeal of the largest reported Rule 11 sanction award in the Massachusetts trial court, which he obtained against a party who had filed frivolous claims against his client.
George has been a leader in Greater Boston legal circles for many years. He serves on the Board of the Boston Bar Foundation and on the governing council of the Boston Bar Association (BBA). He has also served on the BBA's Pro Bono Task Force, and for three years as founding Co-Chair of its Public Service Committee, tasked with assessing and restructuring some twenty-five BBA pro bono and charitable projects servicing thousands of Bostonians annually. He was also a leader of the effort in 1992-93 to establish the Solo and Small Firm Section of the BBA and served as its first Chair, providing practice help to thousands of Boston-area lawyers. He is a regular instructor and panelist for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education in Trial Practice, for Boston College Law School in Ethics, and for Harvard Law School in Trial Advocacy.
George's personal involvement in community service includes ten years of chairing the BBA Summer Jobs Program for Boston public high school students, in which he also teaches seminars on civics and other legal topics; eight years of serving as Board member, fundraiser, and instructor for Discovering Justice, a citizenship education program for Boston school children initiated by Massachusetts federal judges; and many years of accepting pro bono cases for low income clients from Volunteer Lawyers Project and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.
