Verrill Dana Attorney James I. Cohen has been awarded the Ruth S. Shaper Memorial Award by the Maine Public Health Association.
The award is in recognition of Jim's work over the past 3 years to implement the recommendations of the Mayor’s Healthy Portland Task Force, which was established during his tenure as Mayor of the City of Portland. The recommendations included: putting many new bike racks around town, getting more bike lanes striped, establishing an ordinance requiring bike parking for new structures, an ordinance prohibiting smoking at public recreation facilities, an ordinance prohibiting smoking at outdoor eating establishments, and promoting active lifestyles through the “Walk and Talk with the Mayor” program. His program also laid out goals for getting drinking fountains in all school cafeterias, and working with the city and schools regarding their nutrition and wellness policies.
