News Lawyer and Retired Justice Howard Dana Honored by American Bar Association

Efforts to Educate Congress on Legal Services Funding Lead to Award

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 21, 2010 Howard H. Dana has been recognized by the American Bar Association as one of two individual winners of its “ABA Day 2010 Grassroots Award.”  Dana is a retired Maine Supreme Judicial Court associate justice who now serves as counsel in the Portland office of Verrill Dana. He has a long and notable record of advocacy for legal aid funding.

Dana’s efforts to educate Congress on the need for better funding of Legal Services Corporation and his advocacy on behalf of the Legal Services Benefit Act were the catalysts for the honor. Dana’s history of public service also includes terms on the Legal Services Corporation Board of Directors, American Bar Association Board of Governors and a host of ABA entities dedicated to improving access to justice.

The award is being given in conjunction with ABA Day, a series of Capitol Hill events April 20 – 22 designed to involve the American legal community in improving access to justice. Hundreds of leaders from bar associations coast-to-coast convene for the meeting.

With nearly 400,000 members, the American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional membership organization in the world.  As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law.
